Revised: after a year I added a few stars
After one year of use I am removing my complaint about the grind size and giving a compliment for durability. I read some home roaster groups talk about grind size so I did a full comparison and it looks to be fairly diverse grinds. Every other sentence stands. It's still a very messy device even for a grinder being handled with extreme care.Based on this alone, it DOES NOT WORK AS ADVERTISED. It says 9 settings, but it only has one setting . And that setting is coarse combined with super fine dust that's been compacted against the interior top edges of the container because its been blasted out from the 'hopper port'. Some other reviewer here posted a perfect picture of the issue. It's a total design flaw. Yes it "Grinds coffee", but 20 seconds of grinding is a 5 minute clean up. The grind holder is a super smooth semi circular container with no grip points at all. The lid is a 1/8" tall super smooth with no grip points. Now imagine you're trying to remove a teeny slippery semi circle lid from a slippery semi circle container that's holding nothing but dust. Now try to get that material to go into your permanent container. Make sure you are working over a sink and cover your counter in painters cloth before you begin. Nothing but a mess. If you try to tap the top of the container to get everything to fall to the bottom, the dust blasts out of the container hole.Krups probably built this thing on a computer and never put it in front of a test crowd. I would happily volunteer. It's shame because it feels durable. This mess making, one-size-fits-all coffee grinder will probably last a long time.

I've ground about 20lbs of beans so far and find this unit pleasantly surprising. I started by setting it to a more fine position expecting it to beat up the beans more than the consistent grind you get out of commercially sourced coffee grounds. Much to my surprise this unit provided excellent consistency in the grind but also was much finer than I needed for my Mr. Coffee machine. I backed it off several numbers and found consistent bean grind with an excellent yield in the coffee and right at the edge of leaving any thing in the pot after brewing. I using the smaller units and grinding by how it looks I usually got a small residue in the bottom of the pot but an excellent yield with good tasting coffee. With this Krups unit I get the coffee yield but without the residue in the pot.
On the down side there is a small amount of grind that spills out when you remove the container, the lid tends to have a build up inside the edge, and some fine particles do stick to the insides of the container. I found a small soft brush a little bigger than the one they send solves most of this. This thing is noisy which is to be expected but it is doing a job for you so its not an issue. I usually grind a couple pounds of beans which go in several sealed containers lasting a week or more each with a different flavor/roast to which this unit seems to work perfectly for.

i chose burr version over blade version based on reviews and am happy with my choice. been 10 days and it works perfectly so far for my needs which is for auto-drip grounds but, finer since our bunn coffee maker is super fast.. Not too loud for 2 cps at a time and pretty quick at grounding beans. I honestly however have a hard time telling the difference between setting 4 thru 2.5 ground size and thought it was not working right at first but, i sure could taste the slight differences between each mug of coffee i made from the different settings.. yet, I can't seem to get my coffee beans to taste like its grounded version that i love but, not blaming grinder just yet since i bought my coffee beans from here and thinking they are not as fresh as they could be.

update: i have grown to hate this burr grinder! total mess everytime you 'try' to clean residue grounds out of machine areas, quite impossible to get to stuck packed grounds behind the shute part that i can see but can't get to well enough to rid of it. can't remove second burr to clean so it has packed grounds under it and in screw holes. the burr you can remove has packed in grounds in screw holes too and you are not suppose to wash these but, have no choice for it is the only way to get crap stuck in screw head & hole area and even than you can't get it totally clean.. first 2 weeks coffee was great (after i got a fresher bag of coffee beans) but, has not tasted right after that. i started making a week worth of grounds and cleaning machine after every use because coffee would taste nasty the next day if i grounded beans every morning and didn't troughly clean machine out afterwards. that helped some and coffee was better but, still had that off note to it, which i blame on old oily grounds being stuck in the burr and shute area...

quite honestly even if this was not a pain to clean as best as you can, i would of still grew to hate it! freaking coffee grounds constantly jumping out at you and all over the counter from simply opening lid off the container it comes with gets old and you cannot use any other kind because of where the shute is. given i used oilier beans, i would hate to see what mess drier beans would do! i just do not see why these grinder makers can not use anti-static plastic containers to cut this mess down!! been 3mths and done packed this pain in my behind burr grinder up and took it to salvation army and was going to replace it with a glass container grinder but, bought a mess free lido 3 instead that i can actually use every morning without having to take everything apart to clean afterwards!! pricey manual burr but, so worth the mess free and will last for life, highly recommend one and it is easy to use without much effort even with us weakling!!

After searching and reading review after review on the best grinder I went ahead and made the decision to order the Krups GX5000 (thought I'd add the exact name so my review is not skewed and interpreted for another product). Okay, so here's my feedback after having it for one week....Considering the only other coffee grinder I've had was attached to the coffee maker I had at the time, I really don't have a lot of models to compare the functionality of this item to. What I will say is that it grinds okay for regular coffee setting. I've read in other reviews that it's noisy...it is loud but not unbearable. I also find that when the coffee is grinding, I have to hold the top down which is annoying. The other thing is there is no way to take the coffee hopper out to give it a good cleaning. You can only wipe it clean therefore I cannot see it using it to grind anything else but coffee. Ideally I would've like to have an item that is multi-functional...grind coffee beans, nuts, etc. If that is what you're looking for, this is not the product for you. It's either you grind seasonings, or nuts, or coffee - not all of the above. I also agree with one of the other reviews I read in which it states that the coffee grinds is not consistent. I am not changing the grind selection during and it seems that there is variances in the ground coffee. For example, if I'm using the finest setting, all of the ground coffee should be the same, however, I'm noticing the grounds are not the same size - inconsistent extraction of coffee beans.

So all in all, considering I did not want to invest in the higher end items, this serves the purpose of which I bought it and that's to simply grind coffee. I like the size of it as it fits nicely in the kitchen and does not take up much space.

As a follow up to my initial review, I've now owned this item for about a month and I've increased my rating to 4 stars. I absolutely love it...I keep the grind setting on 9 and its perfect for my Dunkin Donuts regular coffee beans or my Starbucks Sumatra whole beans. I look forward to every cup of coffee. Like I said above the only downside is that I cannot fully remove the bean hopper so I can thoroughly clean it as there is always a small coffee bean/residue left behind which prohibits grinding something else like nuts and seeds.

Very happy......

4.0 out of 5 stars Muy bueno para su precio, pero con detalles.
Reviewed in Mexico on July 2, 2019
Style: PlasticVerified Purchase
